Meet the Team & Youth Ambassadors

Merete holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics from New York University. She is a Danish national, multilingual, and is passionate about healthy diets and promoting planetary and human health for future generations.  She lives in Geneva and has one daughter.

Motivated by unhealthy diets produced by food systems that are killing not only people but also our planet as key drivers of climate change, Merete Johansson has launched an urgent Call to Action to nourish and rebalance ecosystems, by transforming food systems. The initiative, launched at the end of 2018, engages with youth, passionate about fixing food broken food systems, and has a Real Food Systems Youth Ambassador and Champions programme, as the #1 solution to the Climate Emergency. The Real Food Systems website and social media offer powerful messages and presentations that time has run out and that we need to act now. As a catalyst for change, RFS volunteers, youth ambassadors and champions also engage with educational institutions, climate networks, and other changemakers and they advocate at international conferences and events.

With 40 years of experience overseeing humanitarian response and development across the globe, Merete has followed numerous global agendas, and witnessed the gaps between targets and results growing. 

All indicators point to a tipping point for our main source of life – the planet.  The writing is on the wall and scientists have given us a small - and last - few years window of opportunity. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to listen and act now.  Merete hopes that this initiative will motivate the young and elderly to demand that they and their planet be nourished with real food for a sustainable and healthier tomorrow – one that respects mother nature.

To highlight the importance and urgency of transforming today’s unhealthy food systems, she draws attention to the inextricable links between global agendas, and the critical need for agents of change to get out of silos and implement prescribed solutions on a macro level, before it’s too late.
