Meet the Team & Youth Ambassadors

Merete Johansson

Founder

Country: Denmark

Motivated by unhealthy diets produced by food systems that are killing not only people but also our planet, Merete Johansson launched Real Food Systems. Food systems are a key driver of global warming and time is running out: she implores that we need to act now. With almost 35 years of experience in humanitarian response and development across the globe, Merete has followed numerous global agendas, and witnessed the ever-growing gaps between targets and results. All indicators point to a tipping point for our main source of life – the planet. Scientists have given us a small – and – last – few years’ window of opportunity. We owe it to future generations to listen to youth, give them a voice, and act with urgency.

Merete hopes that the RFS initiative will motivate us all to demand that our only planet be nourished with real food for a better tomorrow – one that respects mother nature. She draws attention to the inextricable links between the food, health, and planetary sustainability agendas, and the need for coordinated action between the humanitarian agenda and SDGs.

Merete holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics from New York University. She is a Danish national and is passionate about planetary and human health. She currently lives in Geneva, has one daughter, and speaks six languages.
