Meet the Team & Youth Ambassadors
Monami Miyamoto
Youth Ambassador
Country: Japan/Singapore
Monami is Japanese, was raised in Singapore, and is now based in London. She has always had a strong affinity for nature and wildlife and, during her undergraduate degree, she studied ecology and biodiversity. During that time, Monami became interested in sustainability, climate change, and agri-ecology. She pursued research on the impacts of monoculture farming on bumblebee populations, as well as the impacts of rising temperatures on mating behaviour in other insect species. Subsequently, Monami completed a master’s degree in Environmental Technology, which included a research thesis on the nexus of women’s empowerment amongst smallholder farms and sustainable agriculture practices. This research took her on a trip to the African continent and had a profound impact on her view of climate change. Through witnessing ‘on the ground’ impacts of climate fluctuations on crop productivity, and the lack of ability for low-income communities to respond to these challenges, Monami realised the problems were much more systemic. She now believes that addressing the climate challenge requires going beyond reducing emissions, and requires an intersectional approach that considers global inequality, gender inequality, and international development for meeting the basic needs of all people, to work holistically toward regenerative ecosystems and communities.
